The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has agreed to bring 20000 Afghan refugees amid the crisis caused by the sudden return of the Taliban rule. It has published a list on its website explaining the steps it is taking to help Canadians and Afghans who have been adversely affected by this sudden crisis.

Application Requirements
There are to eligible groups under this program viz; group 1 and group 2.
Group 1 eligibility:
- Applicant has to be an Afghan national.
- Afghan national outside of Afghanistan without any durable solution in a third country.
- Woman leaders, human rights advocates, journalists and people who assisted Canadian journalists.
- LGBTI individuals.
- Persecuted religious minorities.
- Immediate family members of the above.
Group 2 eligibility:
An extended family member of people who helped the Government of Canada and is already resettled in Canada.

What is Canada special immigration program for Afghanistan?
The Government of Canada is taking in Afghan nationals under two special programs viz; Immigration program for Afghans who assisted the Government of Canada and Humanitarian program for Afghan nationals in need of resettlement. The Humanitarian program for Afghan nationals in need of resettlement will help resettle Afghan nationals in two ways. The first way is the Government-assisted refugees and the second is the Privately sponsored refugees.
To resettle in Canada under the Government-assisted refugee category, you need a reference from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) or by another designated referral organization.
For being sponsored privately, you need to be eligible as per the sponsor group’s criteria. Sponsor groups usually support a refugee for up to a year covering their costs for clothing, furniture, costs for food, housing, and public transportation along with providing emotional and social support.
